Merry Christmas and Season's Greetings to everyone this Holiday Week

The Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids will celebrate our Club Holiday Party today during our regular meeting.

This year's program will feature the Washington High School Madrigal Singers. We caught them at the Cocoa and Carols concert that Washington High put on earlier this month, so it should be an entertaining Rotary Club celebration this year. The Madrigal Singers also performed at this year's Fire & Ice Festival in Cedar Rapids earlier this month.

Here's a taste of The Madrigal Singers performing at Rotary West's program earlier this year.

Monday, October 3Rd: Hope all is well with you!

This past week we have had some interesting business transactions or business conversations. We had inquiries and business from various areas of the world ...
  • Casablanca Morocco looking for a Model 35C

  • a Barbados customer

  • working with a resort in Mexico

  • Shipment to a distributor in the UK

  • the Philippines

  • various customers in North America

Sadly, we learned last week that one of our customers is battling breast cancer. We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable weekend. Now, we get started with the first full week in October. Robin will likely head to his Rotary Club meeting at Noon, where Terry Branstad (pictured on right), the Republican candidate for Governor will be speaking as today's program. Branstad served four terms previously in the 1980s and 90s. His Lt. Governor selection is State Senator Kim Reynolds (pictured to his left), who previously was a county treasurer, so brings a strong amount of local government experience to the ticket.

A proud fan of the University of Iowa and thankful to a customer, who helped begin high-level window washing

Happy Homecoming weekend everyone! Here's to the quest for the Rose Bowl in 2010 for the Iowa Hawkeyes ...

The University of Iowa was our first high-level window washer customer back in 1957 for Tucker® brand of products. Of course, we have enjoyed providing products to the various Big Ten schools over the years. The educational facility market has always been an enjoyable market for the Tucker Pole.

Personally, we had a great Friday night with 12 Washington High School freshman and a lovely home dinner before the Homecoming dance. Thank you to the Ross family for hosting a wonderful dinner. It was enjoyable seeing the young girls and boys and networking and visiting with parents.

Now, it's Hawkeye Football and Homecoming weekend in Iowa City! #17 Iowa hosts #21 Penn State at Kinnick Stadium at 7 p.m. Central Time, also nationally on ESPN. We know a number of friends, neighbors and family that are looking forward to the game tonight at Kinnick and on ESPN. My second game ever in Kinnick Stadium was in 1974, with my parents, Tommy and LaVerne, for the Iowa-PSU game.

Here's to a win at Kinnick Stadium tonight. On Iowa! We look forward to be in attendance for what should be an outstanding game. Iowa-PSU is tied 11-11 lifetime, though Iowa has won seven over the past eight games vs. Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions.

The official ballots will be mailed mid-November. If you have any questions regarding the nomination process please feel free to contact Debra Nemec, Executive Director of IWCA at 800.875.4922 or email

Heading into the final weekend of September, then October and ISSA-Interclean North America in Orlando on November 9-12, 2010

Well, it's Friday of the final weekend in the month of September already. The month has moved quickly, as well as the entire year. If you are a College Football fan, the season will be a third complete for many schools, after this weekend's games. The University of Iowa hosts Ball State on Saturday at Kinnick to wrap up out of conference play before Big Ten Conference play begins on October 2Nd, with a night game vs. Penn State for Homecoming on national TV.

We hope all is well with you. There have been some ups and downs throughout the past couple of years, with the Flood here in Cedar Rapids has been a challenge for our community, the economic downturn globally has impacted most people and we have seen a lot of change in the market place, with the longest recession, since World War II.

We look forward to the upcoming Interclean Show in Orlando in November. Yes, the show is returning to a November date this year. We hope you will stop by our Booth 3843, if you are making it out to Orlando this November and The Show.

Happy New Year to those of the Jewish Faith, It's September 9, 2010

Happy September 9Th to all ...

On Saturday, Americans and many throughout the world will reflect on September 11Th. In the State of Iowa, the Iowa-Iowa State football rivalry is played. This year at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, the game will be played.

Today, we want to wish a Happy Rosh Hashanah, which is the Jewish New Year, celebrating 2010 to those of the Jewish faith. For our Muslims friends, Eid al-Fitr, the three days of feasting and family gatherings to celebrate the conclusion of Ramadan, begins at sunset tonight.

For most people today, we live in challenging times. Despite our individual differences and personal challenges, we need to find a way to get to know our neighbors and work to live with one another. These can be very difficult at times with our local, state and global challenges facing many in our society.

The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do

  • FIRST: Is it the TRUTH?

  • SECOND: Is it FAIR to all concerned?

  • THIRD: Will it build GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIP?

  • FOURTH: Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

As Rotarians, 'Building Communities -- Bridging Continents' is 2010-11 RI theme, At Tucker Manufacturing Co., Inc. we enjoy the opportunity to help with your window cleaning and surface cleaning needs through utilizing the Tucker® High Level Window Washer and Exterior Maintenance Systems, known as the Tucker Pole System by many in the industry, to reach, wash and clean windows, glass, frames and other exterior surfaces.

In these difficult times, may we find peace with one another. May we seek the Truth, may we choose to be Fair to all concerned, may we seek to build Goodwill and Better Friendship and work to be Beneficial to all concerned.

Since 1945, for three generations, our company and our relationship with RI have been a part of who we are at Tucker Manufacturing Co., Inc. We extend you peace and look forward to our conversation in the future. We would be pleased with the opportuntiy to discuss solutions for your window cleaning and exterior surface cleaning equipment and systems requirements.

Last weekend in the Month of August 2010 ...

Where has the Summer gone?

It has been an up and down Summer of 2010. We have enjoyed some Summer fun, but in many ways Summer is wrapping up way too fast, as we head into Labor Day weekend in one week.

Our kids have returned to school or college. Carole and I send our youngest to high school, while another member of the family has started college.

We will soon be getting ready to take off to Orlando, in late Autumn, for another ISSA Interclean® North American 2010 Trade Show and Convention. If you are coming to Orlando, please look us up at the Trade Show.

We want to wish our customers and visitors a very nice weekend. Carole and I plan to catch a high school football game.

How will letting the so-called Bush Tax Cuts expire impact Small Business America and Recovery?

We are following our Federal Government's work to improve our Economy. The so-called Bush Tax Cuts will expire, if nothing is done.

Tax Alert received from National Write Your Congressman ...

www.nwyc.com

Monday, August 16, 2010

Decision Time: The Bush Tax Cuts
It’s been almost a decade in the making, but one of the more anticipated sessions of Congress is now upon us as we debate what to do about the so-called Bush tax breaks. Of course, what has significantly changed the debate is the state of our federal budget and the economy. But before most of us decide whether this is the time for a tax increase on some, none or all taxpayers, we need a reminder of what they are and how they may affect us.

A Broad List of Tax Cuts
Across the board tax cuts for earned income, long-term capital gains and dividends were enacted through two laws.* They allowed for additional exemptions, deductions, and a broader tax bracket for married couples, thus reducing the “marriage penalty.” An expanded child tax credit and other changes and adjustments were added to the tax code through these laws.*(Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act (EGTRRA) of 2001, and the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003. )

Personal Income Tax Rates
The chart below shows the current tax rates and what they will be if none are extended. The administration and some members of Congress are on record for allowing the lower rates to expire for the top two income brackets. Others feel that the current economic climate is not a good time to place higher taxes on a sluggish economy.

Income Taxes: (married filing jointly)

Current - Income Level - Scheduled Rate Next Year

  • 10% $0-$16,750 15%
  • 15% $16,751-68,000 15%
  • 25% $68,001-137,300 28%
  • 28% $137,301-209,250 31%
  • 33% $209,251-373,650 36%
  • 35% $373,651- and above 39.6%

Family Issues
Married persons received higher standard deductions and larger tax brackets as well as expanded child credit under the 2001 tax breaks. If allowed to expire, this “marriage penalty” would reduce tax brackets and the standard deduction for married taxpayers from their current rates. The child credit would decrease from $1,000 to $500. There is an element of a “hidden” tax inherent in allowing these provisions to expire in that they would, in reality, increase tax liability of married persons.

Capital Gains and Dividends
The maximum tax rate on long-term capital gains and qualified dividends were reduced to 15%. Lower income filers faced a 0% tax rate. If the provision expires, it would move the capital gains rate back to a maximum of 20%, and qualified dividends would resume being taxed at the regular tax rate of the filer, some as high as 39.6%. These rates are also slated to rise for some another 3.8% in 2013 as a result of the recent health care bill.

Capital-gains taxes:

Current - Income Level -Scheduled Rate Next Year
  • 15% Couples up to $250,000 20%
  • 15% Couples over $250,000 20%

The Estate Tax
One of the peculiarities of the 2001-03 tax cuts was to entirely eliminate the estate tax in 2010, then reset the rates to those in existence prior to 2001. Current debate centers on whether a compromise that will maintain exemption and tax rates similar to 2009 levels.

Estate Tax:

Current -Scheduled Rate Next Year
  • Rate 0% 55%
  • Exemption N.A. $1 million

Will we lose a primary road in Cedar Rapids to a new Medical Mall?

Our company is watching how a new development will impact our neighborhood in Downtown Cedar Rapids.

Skywalks an Alternative to Closing Second Avenue Won’t Work for PCI - KCRG-TV
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Closing a stretch of Second Avenue SE is necessary to facilitate patient flow through the Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa’s proposed new medical “mall” at 10th Street SE and Second Avenue SE, the physicians group has said ...

The group and other representatives of the new Cedar Rapids Medical District are holding open houses: to discuss the Medical District as well as PCI’s plans to build the mall inside the district.

  • Wednesday, August 4Th from 4 to 7 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 5Th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Open Houses are in The Ballroom at the Crowne Plaza Five Seasons Hotel

Our business will be impacted, since we are located at 613 Second Avenue SE. For example, driving from NE neighborhoods, like the Daniels Park neighborhood, down Central Point Road NE to 13Th Street SE, we often cut down Second Avenue SE to return to our offices.

The ideal of cutting off vehicle, walking and bike traffic should always be carefully discussed, since it often has negative impacts on quality of life and functionality of neighborhoods, as well as the habits of people.

What if we need a Short Pole?

A recent question on Gary Mauer's World Group asked, the following question...

What company manufactures the shortest pole for pure water window cleaning?

FYI, we can reduce the handle length on any of our 4 foot, 6 foot and 12 foot handles, as a Tucker Pole customer mentioned he did on Gary's World group site. We have replacement parts for just about anything. One of the advantages of aluminum is that it can be customized and it makes repairs in the field a possible option too.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Robin Tucker

As a customer: What should you know about the New TSA screening compliance?

Most of our products are shipped via FedEx. Rarely, do are products go on passenger aircraft. We received the following E-mail from our Sales Representative from FedEx on the NEW TSA screening compliance.

Dear FedEx Clients:

A few months ago I made you aware of the NEW TSA screening compliance that goes into effect on August 1st. See Below:

Again, FedEx will not have to abide by these new TSA regulations. If you are using a freight forwarder, you may want to consider using FedEx domestic palletized service. If you are shipping Internationally, you may want to look at using FedEx International Palletized services. Do you really want your pallet broken down? Do you want your contents x-rayed?

We look forward to any conversations on this topic. Feel free to reach out to our Customer Service.
